Mending memories.

Rupert the Bear has been in my life for as long as I can remember. He is a foundation of my childhood that remained ever-present, even after my mother died when I was just three years old. To me, he became more than just a toy; he was a symbol of her love.

He was always there beside me, a steady comfort when I woke in the night from recurring bad dreams. Over the decades, Rupert has stood the test of time, but his well-loved appearance now tells the story of a lifetime of cuddles. It's finally time to give this cherished friend the care he deserves

Just a girl and her bear

Frayed, faded and forever loved

As a teenager, he absorbed my tears and provided comfort as I tried to navigate the complexities of life and "love." Every time I moved house as an adult, Rupert came too. There was never any question of his place by my side; through every decluttering effort and every seasonal clearing, he remained. Even as husbands came and went, Rupert stayed.

Last year, when I officially moved to Troon, Rupert finally took his place back on the sofa. For the previous few years, he had been tucked away safely in a cupboard—not out of neglect, but because he was so badly damaged. Frayed, faded, and fragile after a lifetime of love, he was waiting for the right moment to be restored.

Be your own expert!

I didn't like to think of him just getting more and more fragile, hidden away in a cupboard just to survive. But the fabric of his trousers had become so threadbare! His leg had actually been bandaged about twenty years ago to prevent the stuffing from spewing out, and even those earlier repairs were starting to fray as the fabric continued to age. There was only one thing for it—Rupert needed a total makeover!

For the past few years, I had toyed with the idea of sending him to The Repair Shop on TV to let the experts fix him up. But then, I realized something important: I actually have the skills to do it myself. The plan finally began to formulate in my mind last summer while we were on holiday in Lewis, when I spied a beautiful bundle of Harris Tweed.

If this Harris Tweed fabric doesn’t scream “Rupert’s trousers” what does?

The Creative Slump: Enthusiasm vs. Self-Doubt

What followed was a project that felt typical of many of mine: I start full of gusto and enthusiasm, then self-doubt creeps in, and I put off finishing for fear of making a mistake. It’s a hurdle many makers face, but I’ve learned that the only way through it is to keep going. I was documenting the early stages on Instagram, so you can still see the original footage from the first half of the project there!

The first job was purely structural: making some "long johns" for Rupert. I needed to ensure he wouldn’t lose any more stuffing through his worn patches. To stay true to my natural fibre rule, I repurposed some cotton cases from a set of new sheets. I also added a little extra stuffing to the areas that needed a boost, giving him back the sturdy shape he had all those years ago.

Spa Day for a Lifetime of Dirt

After this initial delicate operation, Rupert was much more secure—it was finally time for a visit to the spa! I don’t think he’d had a proper wash since I was a child, so it felt like a vital step in his restoration. However, washing a vintage friend requires extreme caution.

I wrapped him carefully inside a towel, cocooned him securely within a pillowcase, and set the washing machine to its gentlest cycle. I used a tiny amount of eco-friendly wool wash to ensure his delicate old fibers weren't stripped by harsh chemicals—keeping his 'spa day' as sustainable as possible!

Waiting for that machine to finish was absolutely nerve-wracking; I was terrified the decades of history might simply dissolve. Fortunately, he survived the "spa treatment" and emerged looking much brighter and fresher than he went in!

I can’t actually believe how filthy he was!

The next task was to craft his fancy new Harris Tweed trousers, but for some reason, I developed a bit of a mental block. I stalled for a long time, hesitant to make that first cut into such beautiful fabric. To be fair, I wasn't entirely idle; I managed to knit a jumper and finish a whole patchwork quilt in the interim!

However, I eventually realized I couldn't let him languish any longer. It felt a bit unfair to leave him just lounging about the house in his underwear! It was time to push past the self-doubt and finally give Rupert the stylish, durable update he deserved.

From Frayed to Fancy: The Final Transformation

Although I had made the long johns with side seams, I found it incredibly tricky to sew the inside leg seams by hand while they were on him. This time, I took a more strategic approach: I sewed the trouser legs on the sewing machine first and then slid Rupert’s legs inside.

This meant I only had one final seam to close by hand. I could have placed it at the front like a traditional "fly," but I chose to hide it at the back for a cleaner finish. Once he was dressed, it was just a case of securing the waistband and ankles with "wee" hidden stitches to ensure his new Harris Tweed trousers stayed perfectly in place.

With his clothes sorted, it was time for the finishing touches. His poor nose had been almost entirely worn away by decades of hugs and kisses, so he received a delicate "nose job" with some fresh embroidery thread. Finally, a pair of new laces in his tiny boots completed the transformation. Rupert was officially ready for his next century of companionship!

It feels like something’s missing…

The Finishing Touch

By now, Rupert was looking pretty dapper! But as I stood back to admire the transformation, I realised there was just one more thing missing to truly finish the look. Can you guess what he needs?

A scarf, of course! His original scarf was lost many moons ago, but this felt like the perfect moment to reinstate it. Adding that final splash of colour with the Harris Tweed felt like the official "welcome home" for my oldest friend.

Although this ends the makeover for now, I suspect there may be one more project on the horizon. Looking at him sitting proudly on the sofa, I can’t help but feel a new red jumper or a cosy cardigan might be in order. After all, a bear who has waited decades for new trousers shouldn't have to wait much longer for a matching knit! What do you think?

Rupert is proof that #lovedclotheslast—and so do loved bears. Do you have a childhood friend tucked away in a cupboard waiting for a little skill and expertise to bring them back to life? Remember, you probably have the skills to be your own expert too! I’d love to hear your stories in the comments below!
